Malaysian gas industry
Summary
Key company in Malaysian gas industry is state-owned Petronas (short for Petroliam Nasional Berhad).
Malaysia is currently the fifth largest LNG producer - significantly behind USA, Qatar and Australia and slightly behind Russia. In 2025, LNG production amounted to 26.4 million tons.
Japan, China and South Korea are key importers of Malaysian LNG.
Key shipper of Malaysian LNG is Malaysian International Shipping Corporation.
Malaysia is also an LNG consumer. LNG is discharged at two Malaysian regas terminals: Pengerang LNG, Melaka FSRU. In 2024, supply volume amounted to 3.4 million tons.
The government plans to make natural gas the main fuel of the local electric power industry by 2032 and replace coal in this capacity.

LNG Plants
The largest and until recently the only LNG plant in Malaysia, Petronas LNG, is located on the island of Borneo (aka Kalimantan) in Sarawak State near the city of Bintulu. Currently, it consists of 9 lines with different shareholder structures. The key shareholder is the state oil and gas company Petronas. This plant is one of the five largest plants in the world.
LNG is also produced and shipped from two floating LNG plants operating on the resource of offshore fields in Sarawak - PFLNG Satu and PFLNG Duo. The names of these floating LNG plants are translated from Malay as the first and the second.
LNG Loadings
Japan, China and South Korea dominate among importers of Malaysian LNG. Export directions are determined by geographical position of Malaysia in the center of Asian market.
Part of domestic LNG goes to Malaysian regasification terminals. Some of it then is re-exported.
LNG Discharge
Malaysia is also an LNG consumer. LNG is discharged at two Malaysian regas terminals: Pengerang LNG, Melaka FSRU. In 2024, supply volume amounted to 3.4 million tons.
In Q2 2025, LNG offloads at Pengerang terminal decreased dischargesdue to a fire on a gas pipeline that supplies regasified natural gas to the northeast of Malaysian peninsula. Compensating volumes were imported from neighboring Thailand via a pipeline.
In May 2025, Russian Ministry of Energy made a proposal to build regasification terminals in Malaysia and supply Russian LNG to these terminals.
Malaysia receives most of the cargoes from Australian Gordon LNG plant.
Since H2 Malaysian territorial waters have been used for transshipment of Russian LNG en route to China.
Domestic market
Gas-fired power generation
Installed capacity of gas-fired TPPs in the country is 16.8 GW. Theoretical maximum demand from gas generation is 102 mcm/d.
The government plans to make natural gas the main fuel of the local electric power industry by 2032 and replace coal in this capacity.
